Automated plant and gap count, to support seed breeding

SESVanderHave, VITO and Biometris (a spin-off of the University of Wageningen) are working on a collaborative project called ‘Sense of Field’, supported by VLAIO (Vlaams Agentschap Innoveren & Ondernemen).

VITO has published a blog on how the sense of field project supports seed breeding trials, by automating the plant count as well as identifying the gaps between crops.

  • The plant count is important to assess whether the germination of the sugar beets has been successful. Doing this via drone imagery, reduces the risk of human error and saves a lot of time and money.
  • When you identify the crop gaps, you also receive useful information on the less performing varieties, but you can also assess nutrient and water usage surrounding crops.
