For our SESVanderHave Innovation Center in Tienen, we are looking for a Pest & Disease Lab Technician.

Your function

As part of Research Unit Pest & Diseases projects and the development and validation of new tools, this role executes firstly molecular lab activities (ELISA, PCR, Macroarray, RPA-LFS, … development & validation), microbiology lab activities linked to plant resistance screenings, inoculum production programs and/or SV Diag Center activities within the RU’s priorities. Secondly, this role executes lab, greenhouse and growth room activities.

More specifically, these will be your main responsibilities:

  • You participate in the preparation, execution, maintenance and quality control analysis of the new disease tests, molecular diagnostics, inoculum productions’ development and validation and new bioassay development within the Research Unit team in the Genetics department.
  • You carry out specific routine operational tests on agrarian plants within the Biotic Stress Management (BSM) department, which deals with disease resistance on plants, inoculum production and SV Diag Center activities.
  • Besides working in the laboratory, you occasionally work in our greenhouse facilities. There you will sow, transplant, innoculate, score samples and also clean, disinfect and prepare the greenhouse compartment for the next planned trials.
  • You check the first raw results, their correctness and quality, and transfer them to the Project Manager Pests & Diseases or the Team Leader BSM accordingly for further analysis and interpretation to validate the final results.
  • You report directly to the Project Manager Pests & Diseases, which is your responsible.

Your profile

  • You have a secondary diploma in Biotechnology, General laboratory techniques, Microbiology or equivalent experience.
  • Besides your mother tongue, you are proficient in at least one additional language (EN, FR, NL,...) to support communication between and within the teams.
  • You are able to work well together in a team.
  • You have a good ability to concentrate.
  • You work orderly, accurately and efficiently.
  • You respect procedures and work instructions.
